After fifty years of marriage, Saint Anna remained barren which was a condition that was considered unworthy and was berated among the Jews at that time. Both lived very devout lives giving one third of their income to the poor and one third to the Temple. Having been rebuked by the High Priest at that time for their childless marriage, Saint Joachim, in shame, took his flocks into the mountains refusing to return while Saint Anna prayed in her garden. God sent the Archangel Gabriel to each of them, to deliver God’s message that they would give birth to "a daughter most blessed, by whom all the nations of the earth will be blessed, and through whom will come the salvation of the world." Each promised to have their child raised in the Temple as a holy vessel of God. The Archangel told Saint Joachim to return home, where he would find his wife waiting for him in the city gate. Saint Anna conceived shortly thereafter, and in the ninth month giving birth to the Most Holy Theotokos, who in turn would bring forth the salvation of mankind, our Lord God and Savior, Jesus Christ.
