Agate

Agate, a semiprecious mineral, is essentially quartz and comes in a variety of color bands and degrees of transparency. Most of the agate used by the Monastery is from Brazil. Many shades of blue, beige, and green transparent agate slices in varying shapes and colors are used to make icons. When held up to light, the icon transforms as the colors of the agate transform. Larger pieces come in rose, black, and green quartz. Unless they are free standing book ends, the agate icons are sold with stands.

The Monastery decoupages and embellishes icons on many sizes and colors of agate. Many pieces of agate form solid “rocks” which are then fashioned into bookends. The Monastery also uses agate with icon images to make baptismal and wedding favors, pendants for religious jewelry, and key chains.

Above is a sampling if icons on agate and agate rock.
